So I had birthday dinner and watched Tangled with the family tonight. I had never seen it before but it was really great. The animation was stunning and I love all the various expressions the characters go through. Computer animation has come such a long long way since the early days and the range of expressions it can produce now is so lifelike that it's wonderful. There were even a couple of moments where it almost looked like it actually was real. The horse definitely stole the show, but the movie was really funny overall. Especially those scenes in the tower when Rapunzel was trying to stuff Flynn in the wardrobe. XD

The songs were really great too. Especially that reprise of "Mother Knows Best" in the forest, when the mother was challenging Rapunzel to give the crown to Flynn. I was like "Wow, well that was powerful and evil. o_O" And the whole lantern scene and the song there was really beautiful. Heh, kinda made me wish I could experience something like that too. Anyway, yeah, I really liked it a lot. I'll have to get it myself one of these days so I can watch it again.

Also, I'm convinced that Maximus must be related to Prince Phillip's horse, Samson. The two have pretty much the same build and such similar expressions. ^^;

I also got an XBox 360, which I wasn't expecting at all. I have no idea where I'm going to put it though. My room's still a wreck and I don't really feel like trying to figure out what the crap is going on with all the connections I already have in here just to hook up another system. Maybe I'll just put it on the tv downstairs, that might be easier. It's a better tv than the one in my room anyway. Mine is like from... 1993 I think. -_-

Geez, LJ sure has been borking up a lot lately. Would be nice if they could get that fixed. :\

Anyway, not much going on as usual. I've been buying LJ Vgifts and sending them to RPers whose threads I've enjoyed lately, and it's actually kinda fun trying to find something that seems appropriate. I thought about sending them logged in but then chickened out and went anonymous instead. ^^; I dunno, I guess I didn't really want to weird anyone out by them seeing some random journal they've never heard of sending them gifts. But it made me smile to do it anyway, and I hope maybe they enjoyed them too.

Raiding tonight in WoW... I don't really feel like it but I have to go. :\ We're trying to get Cho'gall down, but coordination on that fight is kinda hard. Doesn't really help that I have to dps, which I'm not used to doing at all. I hate priest dps... so boring.

Also, the weather's being really weird lately. Last week it was cold enough to snow and this week it' feels like it's in the 80's. Make up your mind already, Mother Nature.

I love how incredibly obvious it is that they're standing on the ground in front of a blue screen in the flying scenes. XD

Y'know, it's kinda strange. I've been feeling rather down lately and thinking that all the griping, whining, drama, rudeness, and stupidity on the internet has made me bitter and jaded towards the world in general. And yet all it took to suddenly restore my faith in humanity was something as simple as watching one video of people dancing stupidly together. I dunno, maybe I just forgot how easy it is to get enjoyment out of simple little things. If people around the world can get together and have fun like that, maybe they're not so bad after all. :)

So...

My computer's been running slowly lately so I bought some new RAM for it. Installed it on Wednesday, and everything seemed to be working smoothly. Saturday morning rolls around and I'm surfing the web when all of a sudden my browser freezes up. I try to force quit and it won't let me. In fact, I can't do anything so I turn the computer off and reboot. An error message pops up telling me that I need to restart my computer, and it does this everytime I try to start the damn thing.

I thought it might be a problem with the memory I just put in, but the same thing happened when I put the old memory chip back in. I discovered today that I can boot into Windows mode just fine, however. Brian came over and tried reinstalling the latest OS version, and we discovered that my computer is apparently not acknowledging the existance of the Mac partition at all. So something has somehow gotten itself horribly screwed up, and I'm worried that everything I had on my Mac may be lost forever now. Brian suggested that I try hooking my computer up to Mom's through firewire and see if I can get my stuff off that way, and then try to do a wipe and reinstall of the OS. I hope it'll work and I won't have to pay big bucks to get this stupid thing fixed. :(

I really hate technology sometimes. I have no idea why on earth this all happened in the first place, and it's pissing me off.

I probably really shouldn't be here, since I've got an article with 300 freakin' footnotes I'm supposed to be working on, but I just thought I'd take a break from that anyway.

Since Christmas is right around the corner, I've been thinking about the things I'd really love to receive but I know no one would ever actually buy for me in a million years. Or in other words:

My Impossible Dream Wishlist )

Ah well, back to the grind now I guess.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else ever have problems with their LJ S2 style timing out and refusing to load? Happens all the time to me and it's very annoying. Grrr.....

And this post would be a lot easier to type up if a certain kitten didn't have her back half draped over the keyboard...

Guess what I just found while cleaning up my room? A notice telling me that my vehicle registration expired in December. Yep, I've been merrily driving with illegal plates for the last month. ::headdesk:: Thank goodness I haven't done anything to draw the attention of the cops to it. I just paid my fee online at the DMV website, though, so hopefully my new stickers will be here soon. I swear, it's times like this that make me think that I need a new brain. Or at least someone to manage my life for me, since I'm apparently incapable of doing it myself. :p

Oh and speaking of cops, I went to the front door yesterday morning to see if our cat wanted to come in and found 4 police cars parked on the street. Apparently something was going on at the house next door to us, but I couldn't tell what. I'm still not sure what that was all about, but at least there's no crime scene tape or anything, so it couldn't have been too serious. Or at least I hope not.

My boss came up to me on Friday and asked if I would start working from 4 to 8 to help out another team, which was getting slammed with work. Since the manuscripts that come in to my team are drying up fast and most days I usually run out of stuff to do by 2 or 3, I agreed to do it, even though I don't particularly want to work on the night shift. But I figured maybe it wouldn't hurt to do it for awhile at least, until I can find another job. I was going to go in around 2:30 or 3 this afternoon, but my mom called to say that I shouldn't come in until 7. They couldn't get ahold of the girl who's supposed to train me to ask her to come in early, so now I have wait until she gets in at her usual time, which is around 7. Ugh. I'm starting to regret my decision already. :(

Aww, shucks. I was quite enjoying the bitchfest going on in [livejournal.com profile] swsa's journal last night, although I was too tired to actually join in. I can't access the post this morning though, so I guess I was taken off the filter. Oh well. It was nice to know that there are other people who get annoyed at the same things I do anyway. :)

I also forgot to watch Alias last night, since I didn't watch the rerum of Lost. And it was Ultimate Drew's episode too, dagnabbit. I did see the last couple of minutes, but of course they didn't make much sense since I didn't know what the story was. Guess I'll be downloading this one later.

Why the heck am I up this early? I woke up to use the bathroom, but then for some reason I couldn't calm my brain down enough to go back to sleep. I really hate it when that happens, especially since I really am still tired. I thought maybe if I posted something, anything, then my brain would finally shut the hell up and go to sleep. Of course, I'm probably still going to be tired when I wake up in the morning anyway. I seem to be tired and lethargic all the time, and it's really annoying. I really hope I don't have seasonal affective disorder, like my mom does. Although I suspect it probably has a lot to do with how overweight I am, too. I really ought to start trying to get in shape now so I'll be ready to hike up a mountain for my brother's wedding in May. But everytime I think about going walking or something, I just don't have the energy to do it. *sighs*

My cold is almost over, so that's good. Except that now I've found out that I managed to get a scratch on my right eye again. This really pisses me off because this same thing happened almost exactly a year ago and I still don't understand what on earth caused it either time. IIRC, both times I felt a sharp pain in my eye when I was waking up in the morning, so the only thing I can think of is that there's an eyelash somewhere that's poking it or something. The doctor hasn't mentioned anything like that, though. Anyway, last time I think the scratch was on the iris. This time the doctor says that it's right on the pupil and that I could lose my sight if it were to get infected. So I'm definitely going to make sure I remember to use the drops he gave me, since I obviously don't want that to happen. The only good thing about the situation is that at least my eye isn't hurting as much as it did last year and I didn't have to try and drive myself home from the doctor's through snow and ice. Yep, that was definitely a lot of fun. :p

Boy, I'm just really not getting off on the right foot this year am I? I hope the rest of the year will go much more smoothly than this.

Have you ever had the feeling where you're just so bored and restless and you know that there must be something that you want to do, but you just can't think of what it is? Yeah, that would be me right now. Or it could just be the cold talking. I'm slowly being driven crazy by my stupid runny nose.

This is also probably the most pointless post I've ever made, but since it's so late at least it won't bother anyone.

I hope everyone has had a Happy Thanksgiving so far! Our family dinner isn't until Sunday, although my parents and I did go over to my brother's apartment today to have lunch. Tomorrow, Mom and I are planning to hit the stores and buy a DVD recorder/VCR combo for one of my Christmas presents, so I can transfer all this video tapes I have to DVD and hopefully free up a lot more space in my room. I'm not looking forward to having to deal with the insanely huge shopping crowds, though.

Before I go, I just want to say that I'm very thankful for everyone on my friends list. You guys have been so nice to me and your thoughts are always so fun and interesting to read. You've helped make this fandom a brighter place for me and I love you all for it.

Just because I feel like throwing my 2 cents in:

  • Seeing JM with chest hair is rather strange.

  • But not as strange as seeing DB smiling and laughing. And his hair looks like it's a lighter color than Angel's, which throws me off too.

  • They are still very handsome men, though.

  • Apparently JM acted rather juvinile on the TRL show. Certainly not appropriate behavior for a guy his age, but I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised by it. The show is geared towards the screaming teen set, so of course he's going to act extra juvinile because he always plays to the crowd.

  • I snickered like a twelve year old when I read his comment about SMG. They were so doing it back in the day. Yes indeedy. ;)

  • It seems to me that the Secret Service guys were just doing their job, following up on something that could be a possible threat to the President. Methinks that everyone should focus their anger instead on the moron who turned anniesj in.

  • Election day frightens me. Not because I'm afraid of the Bush administration (which I'm not) but because I'm afraid of what the loonier Bush haters might do if he does get re-elected.

  • I've been in lurker mode recently. I feel bad about not making many comments this week on other people's posts, and there have been quite a few that I wanted to respond to but never did, but I haven't really been able to come up with anything to say. So I apologize for that, and I'll continue to work on being better about it in the future.

  • Here endeth the listing.

the_abcs_of_justice: (road)
I wonder if I should spring for some more icon space? I've got so many icons now that I'd like to use that 15 just isn't enough, and it can be a real pain having to go in and delete and swap. Then again, I often forget to actually change icons when making posts or comments and just end up using my default icon anyway. So even though I'd like more, I can't decide whether it's worth the extra space or not. Hmmmm......

Well, today's been a rather crappy day. Not on a major scale or anything, more in the "God, that is so annoying" class. I mentioned before that I was going to the state library in NC to do research, and so today was the day of the trip. So Mom and I drive down there, which took about 3 hours, only to find out when we get there that the library was closed because their sewage system was broken. Ugh. Way to waste an entire day all for nothing. :(

Maybe I'll watch some Buffy to cheer myself up. Or Firefly. Yeah, I know that I said I wasn't going to buy any more DVDs for awhile, but that was before I found a Best Buy gift card while I was cleaning my room. Apparently I had gotten it for Christmas or my birthday and then forgotten all about it. So that was $15 of the Firefly set that I didn't have to pay myself, and the rest ended up being about $28. Sweet deal. :)
the_abcs_of_justice: (reading)
Woo! I'm on vacation this week! I'm not actually going anywhere, other than maybe a few daytrips, but it's still nice to have some time off for awhile. And I finally have a chance to go down to the North Carolina State Library like I've been wanting too for months and try and do some research on Mom's side of the family. Her relatives have been the hardest to find since they all either come from NC or Poland, unlike most of my Dad's ancestors who have been pretty much living in the same area of Virginia for the past 300 some years. But since I'm obviously the only genealogy nut around here, I won't bore ya'll with any more details. :)

Not much else going on really. I went out today to see if there were any new video games worth buying, but I didn't find anything interesting. I thought about buying the Firefly DVDs, but then decided to wait a bit longer on that. I have way too many DVDs that I still haven't watched yet, as well as tons of books I still have to read and games I haven't finished, so there just doesn't seem to be a point in getting any more right now. I really ought to watch my Buffy DVDs now that I've almost got the complete set, but for some reason I keep putting it off. I don't really know why. It's certainly not out of dissatisfaction or anything, because I love the show right down to the very last "Grr. Argh." I really did want to start watching it from the beginning, because a mailing list I'm on is doing a rewatch and analyze of the show episode by episode, but I still haven't gotten around to doing that yet. I'll have to force myself to stop procrastinating I guess, before I miss out on all the discussion again.

I wasn't really planning on spending time on the computer this weekend, since it's a holiday and all, but I got another idea for a wallpaper so I just had to work on it. It's up on my site now, the first one with the red outline around it.

So, not much happening around here lately other than Dad continuing to work on the garage and Mom continuing the renovation of her bathroom. We've got three bathrooms in this house, but only one of them has a working toilet right now which really sucks. Hopefully Mom's bathroom will be done soon, though. She's got all the painting done, wallpaper border up, new light fixture and medicine cabinet. It's starting to look really nice. Next comes the tiling of the floor, painting the linen closet, installing new shower fixtures, and putting the toliet back in place. Problem is though that the bathroom is so small that only one person can really work in there at a time. That's why it's taken nearly a month to get to the point it's at now.

*sighs*

I am so very, very bored. All it's been doing is raining and thundering, because what's left of Tropical Storm Gaston is sitting right on top of us. I've been watching the news, and there's a whole heck of a lot of flooding going on around the area. More than I've seen in quite a while. I don't think the damage is going to be quite as bad as Hurricane Isabel was, though, so that's something at least.

I finished reading all the Vulkon reports that [livejournal.com profile] teenes has up so far. I love reading about other peoples con experiences, and she's done a great job transcribing some of the Q&A sessions. But maybe I shouldn't have read them, 'cause now I'm frustrated with James again. Dude, if he keeps this up, I am so going to fly to California and smack him over the head with the Season 7 dvds when they come out. :p Yeah, I definitely think he's letting his real life issues get in the way of interpreting Buffy's feelings for Spike.

I wish people would come up with new questions to ask him, though, because I'm tired of seeing the same old questions and same old answers pop up over and over again. At least some of them were new or things I hadn't heard before, so that was interesting. I know there are probably a lot of fans who aren't online and therefore don't know that their questions have been asked so many times before, but still.....

Ah well, it still sounds like it was a great con. I wonder if anyone has written up a report about ASH's Q&A session yet? He seems like such a fun guy and I'd love to know what he had to say.

Yeah, I'm definitely bored. Posting my opinions about a con I didn't even go to. Hoo boy.

Huzzah! I finally got my car back! What a relief! The guy did a great job fixing it up, and for a lot cheaper than the insurance estimated the repairs would be. Speaking of insurance, the check finally came in the mail too, so I'm good to go. Now all I have to worry about is my court date this week. I think this will be the third time I've had to go to traffic court, and I'm a bit paranoid that they might throw the book at me or take my license away because these accidents keep happening. But I'm being ridiculous, aren't I? Surely the worst that could happen is that they make me take another driving class and pay a fine. Right? *is still nervous*

And since I mistyped practically every word in this post and then had to go back and correct it, I'd better sign off now. My brain obviously hasn't decided to wake up yet. :P

*sighs*

Well, it's been two weeks now and I'm still carless. The stupid insurance company declared the car a loss even though the damage wasn't really that severe. Problem is, it's almost ten years old so they didn't consider it's value to be enough to justify the cost of repairing it. So we decided to take the option of keeping the car and taking the settlement of $2090, then using that money to get it repaired independently. Dad found a guy who's willing to fix it, and possibly for less than the initial damage estimate was for. He won't be able to start working on it until this weekend, though, so it may be at least another week before I can get it back.

On a lighter note, I just found out last night about the political cartoon on jibjab.com that apparently a lot of people are crazy about so I decided to watch it. Damn, that thing is hilarious! I like how it makes fun of both presidential candidates without playing favorites. I really could have done without seeing that image of Kerry in bondage gear, though. *shudders*
