Hunh. I've obviously not been keeping up with the news at all lately, because I never realized until tonight that one of the final five contestants in American Idol, Elliot Yamin, is from Richmond, VA. In fact, he went to high school right here in the West End, although it wasn't the same one that I went to. I hope he wins. That would be neat. :)

I finally had to give up on trying to download the last episode of the Amazing Race since my connection kept cutting out on me after only a few minutes. So today I just went back to read other people's posts to see who won. Wow, Freddy and Kendra, hunh? That really surprised me, since Kris and Jon were so strong throughout the race. Then again, personality problems and arguements aside, Freddy and Kendra were pretty good racers, too, so I guess maybe it shouldn't be too surprising. I don't know whether I truly like them or not, but I'm not particularly upset that they won. They had their moments when I did find them amusing, like Kendra's silly antics during the grape-stomping Roadblock. My personal favorite, though, which wasn't even intentionally funny, was when she wanted to go back to the hotel and do research when the clue had quite clearly told them to go to Checkpoint Charley. Hee! She's such a spoiled princess. :)

I've got to say though, that I'm not sure whether or not I'll watch the next season, 'cause I'm already feeling burnt out on this show. It's not due to anything the show has done, though, but more because of the fan reaction. I can understand the hatred everyone had for Jonathan and Victoria. I certainly didn't like watching them, either, and I agree that the bunching up of the racers happened way too often. And I was sad that most of the teams I liked ended up getting eliminated, leaving only the more argumenative teams. But there was still plenty of stuff that I thought was good, and so it annoyed me that so many people, and a certain recapper, started moaning about how much the season sucked. And yes, I am looking directly at you, TWoP.

*sighs* It's probably my own fault, really, for even going back to TWoP in the first place. But I enjoyed reading the recaps for Season 5, even though I hadn't yet watched the show then, and it was just nice to read something from a recapper who actually liked the show she was watching. But then as this season progressed, she started dropping in things like "This show is losing me" and IMO her sense of humor went right out the window and all that was left was bitterness. I don't know, maybe I'm not really being fair here but... it's just that I think far too many people mistake bitterness for snarking, and that gets on my nerves and takes the fun out of everything for me. Because snark is supposed to be funny, damn it, even if you don't like what you're watching. Like Mystery Science Theater 3000. At least those guys knew how to do it right.

Anyway, I guess what I've learned from all this is that I just don't have the strength to deal with most of online fandom anymore. And also that I'm an idiot for trying to read TWoP recaps for a show I like. I'd probably get along much better if I read recaps for shows I don't care about at all. :p

I have nothing particularly meaningful to say about tonight's episodes, since my brain is still fried from work, but anyway:

Boy, I haven't really had much interesting to say the past couple of weeks have I? Maybe I'll be able to finish that season 7 writeup this week since I finally found my notes, which had gotten buried in my room during my last fit of cleaning up. Now let's see if I'll be able to pick up my train of thought where I left off....

Not really much to talk about on the home front. My brother's girlfriend finally graduated from her RN program, so we went to the ceremony for that tonight and then out to dinner afterward. I watched The Amazing Race when we got home, and was very sorry to see that Gus and Hera were eliminated. I really liked them a lot. I was happy that Bolo and Lori were able to make it out of last place and jumped all the way to first, though. I think I admire them even more after seeing the way they chugged down that blood to make it through the Fast Forward. *shudders* Man, that was gross. After seeing that, it kinda made the other teams look like wimps for throwing up after having to eat bowls of very spicy soup.

And then I had a sudden urge to look through my bookmark collection, which I haven't done for awhile. So I got the box out from under my bed and counted them, and discovered that there were 415 of them. And that's only part of my collection. I have a couple of big albums full of bookmarks, too, but I haven't counted out those yet. Most of the bookmarks I have are the kind you can buy in any big bookstore. Some of them come from libraries, some from giftshops and other places around the world, and some of them are handmade and fairly old. I thought maybe I'd share some of my favorite ones here..

Like an idiot I somehow managed to overwrite the Buffy section of my webpage with another file, so I've spent the last few days trying to fix that. I think the site as a whole looks a little bit nicer now, since I figured out how to put more than one table on a page so now the spacing in the different sections doesn't look all wonky. I wish I could understand how cascading style sheets work, though. I tried experimenting with them tonight, and I got it to work once but then I couldn't get it to do anything after that. Guess I'll just have to stick with tables then.

I was kinda disappointed that there was no new episode of The Amazing Race this week, but the recap show was rather fun to watch. I liked seeing some of the footage that didn't make it into the actual episodes. My favorite part, though, was Lena and Kristy putting on their makeup while heading to one of the pit stops and Kristy calling Phil a "Choo-Choo Charlie". I have no idea what that is, but I'm assuming that it means that she thinks he's hot. Which he is. :) I miss Lena and Kristy. And Don and Mary Jean, too. Watching their eliminations last night made me sad all over again. Heck, I even miss Meredith and Maria and Joe and Avi, even though they weren't around for very long. Ah well, at least there are still three teams left that I like. Kris and Jon are so cute, and I love how they take everything in stride, even when they make a mistake. Gus, Hera, Lori, and Bolo have really grown on me too.

I guess the year just couldn't end without giving us a couple of more surprises, hunh? First the tsunami and now Jerry Orbach is dead. That last one especially makes me sad since I've been a big fan of Law & Order and I loved Lenny Briscoe. I also keep thinking about the tsunami and all the damage it did, and I kind of dread logging on to my computer every day only to see that the death toll has gone up yet again. I'm hoping that maybe they're overestimating the deaths by a lot, because I don't see how they could have arrived at a solid reckoning yet. But considering how powerful the earthquake was, the numbers probably are pretty accurate. I don't think I want to know what kind of damage a 9.0 earthquake would do if it had been on land instead of in the ocean.
the_abcs_of_justice: (contemplation)
I still can't believe that this week's episode of The Amazing Race had a 'To Be Continued' at the end of it. That's kind of unprecedented for a reality t.v. show, isn't it? Boy, that really was one hell of a long race leg, though. But I loved how Gus and Hera managed to nab the plane tickets away from Jonathan and Victoria by going to a travel agent, and how that cabbie got fed up with Jonathan and Victoria's shrillness and threw them out of the car. That was awesome. And seeing the teams cram themselves into those tiny little cars was hilarious, too. But poor Lori and Bolo.... ouch. They're so far behind now that I just don't see how on earth they have a hope of catching up. I'm sure they're desperately praying for a non-elimination leg at this point. I'm hoping that J & V will get eliminated soon, though. Even the rest of the teams are getting sick of them.

Anyway, this will be my last post here until after the holidays, so I hope you all have a very Merry Heaven's Day! AKA "Merry Christmas!" to the non-Big O obsessed, which would be everyone who isn't me. ;)

For one of her holiday wishes, [livejournal.com profile] elisi wanted a 'Chosen' wallpaper with the flaming hands. So this is what I came up with. I hope you like it, elisi! And I can always make any changes to it you might want. :)

And as for tonight's Amazing Race, Victoria really needs to stand up to Jonathan and kick his ass. I seriously don't know why on earth they ever got married in the first place, since all he ever does is scream at her. I think his ox must have broke a long time ago. :p

Spoilers for The Subtle Knife )

In other news, I watched The Amazing Race for the first time tonight. I read some of the recaps at TWOP after the whole "My ox is broken!" incident of the last one and they were quite hilarious. So I thought I'd give it a try this time around, and it really is pretty funny in a cheesy sort of way. What amuses me most is that it's only been one episode and already some of the couples have started screaming and insulting each other. Heh. Way to hold up under pressure there, people. Personally, I'm rooting for the grandparents. I doubt they'll make it to the end, but I was rather impressed that they actually managed to make the climb up that ice cliff, so you never know.

ETA: Dude, why is Spike's speech to Buffy in 'Touched' used with the picture of Buffy and Angel kissing on one of the Season 7 DVD covers? That's just wrong on so many levels. But at least I can still bask in the lovely Spuffy cover, so I guess it doesn't really matter. Or at least I could, if my copy would ever actually get here. *glares in the direction of Amazon.com* I'll give you till the end of the week, people. Then I'm getting mad.
the_abcs_of_justice: (Default)
I'm not sure who I want to win American Idol now. I still like Fantasia best and think she has the most talent of the two, but if there's anything that this season has taught me it's that talent only gets you so far with the voters. I'm tempted to start cheering for Diana like [livejournal.com profile] mgal, because that girl really has improved over the course of the show. I think my bet's still with Fantasia, though, which probably means I'll end up being wrong. :p

I'm also still sad over the end of the Jossverse. So much so that I can't even really bring myself to read anyone else comments on it, which sucks because I really would like to know what other people have to say about it. I should just force myself to sit down and read it this week because who knows how much longer the fandom interest will last now that it's all over and this may be one of my last chances to read great discussions about the shows I love. Unless they decide to do those tv movies, of course, which I hope they do. *crosses fingers*

Not again! I thought after the whole John Stevens fiasco that America would wise up and clean the wax out of their ears. Apparently not. Granted, La Toya was a bit off her game last night, but I thought that Jasmine was obviously the weakest one. And yet she ends up being safe and La Toya goes home. Does America have some sort of grudge against the black girls that I don't know about, because they seem bound and determined to get rid of them no matter what.

*sighs* Why exactly am I still watching this show again?

ETA: To cheer myself up, I think I'll post my newest wallpaper, which I just finished. I'm quite proud of this one, actually. I think it's probably the best so far. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether I should've made the blue deeper or not. Either way looks good, I guess. Anyway, my inspiration came from a LoTR screensaver I saw on someone's computer at work, and I thought it would be cool to try and imitate using a Buffy theme instead. I was thinking about doing one for each major character on the show, but we'll see how it goes.

My boy George didn't make the cut on American Idol tonight. Damn. It was really hard to see him go. I've been rooting for him ever since his very first audition, and I thought he might have a shot at making it to the final two. At least he managed to make it this far, though, but it won't really be the same without his constant cheeriness. ;_; Anyway, now that there's only four left, my prediction is that LaToya and Fantasia will be in the final two, with LaToya being the winner.

I've been seriously stressed out all day, what with trying to think of something to get for Mother's Day and my little cousin's birthday party this weekend, having to pay $450 to get the brakes on my car fixed, having to mail out 39 freaking articles at work, worrying about what's going to happen on Angel tonight, and panicking about whether I have everything I need for my trip next week. Thankfully, I finally managed to calm down and am feeling much better now. Of course, finding some new stories to read helped a lot. Yes, it's fic rec time again! :)

Tonight's offering is two fics by Kelso:

Cancellation Notice - Angel and the gang take on the task of trying to save their own show
SpikePuppet - Spike inadvertently gets turned into a puppet and decides to visit Buffy in Rome. Definitely not one of his brighter ideas. :)

Both of them are still WIPs, but worth reading and very funny IMO.

I thought for sure that Fantasia, Jennifer, and LaToya would be the safe group this week on American Idol, and obviously poor George did as well. Maybe the voters really do think that this is a popularity contest instead of a singing competition. I like John Stevens, and I think that he can sing, but there's no way that he's good enough to remain in the competition. And Iooking at his reaction each time someone else is booted off the show, I think he knows it, too. And although I think that George is good enough to win, he's been kinda off the past two weeks, so much so that I was afraid he might get the boot this week. But Fantasia, Jennifer, and LaToya... they were excellent last night, and I just can't think of any reason why all of them would end up in the bottom other than America is judging solely on how much they like the contestants, not on how well they can sing. *shakes head sadly* Such a shame.

Anyway.... I was originally going to post about something else tonight, but my brain is too fried from work and I just don't feel like making the effort right now. So instead, I think I'll reccomend a fic that I just finished reading. It's not very long and is set in Season 5 shortly after 'Intervention'.

The Naked Truth by Spring Summers

I highly recommend reading her Spikecentricity episode reviews too. She has some pretty interesting insights on the show and its messages.

Y'know, I think this show is starting to grow on me. I didn't really think much of the first episode I watched, the one where Lauren was going to kill her father. Unlike BtVS, where I immediately loved the Scooby Gang the first time I saw them, I didn't really feel anything for the Alias characters at first. Well, except for Marshall. He's such a big dork that I love him already. :) And I did feel badly for Lauren when I saw that she didn't actually want to kill her dad, and probably wouldn't have gone through with it if her mom hadn't come into the room and finished the job. And what the heck was up with that, anyway? Is her mom evil, too?

So anyway, this week I was much more into what was going on. Even though I spent most of the episode shouting at the television:

More about last night's episode )

Yeah, I guess I'll be sticking around to see how the rest of the season plays out. :)
