Y'know, now that I've had a couple of days to calm down from the very depressing Sunday I had, I'm starting to think that I shouldn't have made my last post public. I disabled comments because I didn't want it to seem like I was begging for sympathy, but it didn't occur to me at the time that if I felt that way then I probably just should have vented in private to begin with. So, sorry about inflicting my angst on y'all out of the blue like that.

Looking on the brighter side, there is at least one good thing about this month so far. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mgal, I now get to listen to JM read Storm Front every night this week. :) I've listened to three of the CDs so far, and I'm really enjoying it a lot. James has a very nice voice, and he's good at reading at a calm, steady pace so it's easy to understand what's being said. I get a kick out of hearing him do different voices for the characters, too. :)

Harry is a great protagonist, and I love him already. I especially love his sense of humor and all the little asides as he explains to us how the world of magic works. And it's neat that his name is a shoutout to two famous magicians. There's a lot of serious stuff going on in the story, what with the magical double homicide and poor Harry inadvertantly making enemies left and right. At the rate he's going, I'm starting to wonder if the whole city will be pissed off at him by the time the book ends. But there are also a lot of funny moments that had me giggling out loud. Some of my favorites are Harry's reaction to Morgan's sudden appearance at the lake (Have you ever been approached by a grim-looking man, carrying a naked sword with a blade about ten miles long in his hand, in the middle of the night, beneath the stars on the shores of Lake Michigan? If you have, seek professional help. If you have not, then believe you me it can scare the bejeezus out of you.), and his conversation with Bob the Peeping Skull. There's plenty more, but I'd be here all night if I tried to list them all!

I blame Mgal for getting the image of Angel as Harry and Kate as Murphy stuck in my head, though. Even if it actually is kind of appropriate. After all, Harry did say in the first chapter that wizards are great at brooding and Murphy is a tough, blonde policewoman just like Kate. ;)
