Well, I just got back from Dragon*Con today and I had a really great time! I got to meet LeVar Burton and Marina Sirtis and got their autographs, and I even got my picture taken with LeVar! I don't think I've ever mentioned it here before, but I'm a huge fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation so getting to see them was a big thrill for me. I also got Adam Baldwin's autograph just a few minutes before he had to leave to catch a plane, so I'm glad I didn't wait until Monday to do that or I would have missed him entirely. Those were the main three I had wanted going in to the con, but I also ended up getting Dean Haglund's autograph when I bought the DVD of his Sunday night improv show and went to pick it up from him on Monday. And after passing by the table several times on my way out of the dealers area on Sunday, I finally noticed that the artist Jason Palmer was there. I don't know if anyone else remembers him, but there was a link to his Firefly painting at Whedonesque months ago. I mentioned in a post months ago how I would love to have a copy of that painting and now I do, complete with his signature. Funny how wishes do come true sometimes. :)

The Star Trek and Firefly panels I went to were all very interesting and entertaining, but it didn't even occur to me to take any notes so I guess I can't say too much more about them. Dean Haglund's improv show was hilarious and I was laughing so hard that tears started coming out. I also went to see the costume parade on Saturday morning, but since I wasn't exactly sure where it was taking place I ended up following a group of people in costumes from the hotel all the way down the street several blocks to a park, which was the starting point. There were all sorts of great costumes there, from Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, anime shows, and lots more, and there were some actors riding in it as well, like the guy who played Denethor in Return of the King. What surprised me the most, though, was the squad of Cobra Vipers at the head of the parade, complete with flag, and Destro and the Baroness. Wonder how come there weren't any Joes, though?

I was also very happy to get to meet [livejournal.com profile] fer1213, [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup, [livejournal.com profile] molly_may, [livejournal.com profile] asta77, and Fer's sister and hang out with them for a couple of days. Although I have to apologize for being so quiet. I hope I didn't come across as being cold or anything, because that definitely wasn't my intention. I thought maybe since I've talked to most of you online regularly that it would be easier to do in person than is usual for me, but I had an attack of insecurity and was afraid I might come across as a nuisance. I really wish that hadn't been the case. :(

ETA: Also, a very belated 'Happy Birthday!' to [livejournal.com profile] aycheb, [livejournal.com profile] sweet_ali, [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup, and Mbaby. I really need to remember to look at that birthday list thing more often. *sighs*

Gah! I can't believe it's August already! Only a month left to the con! Now I'm starting to get really nervous. If I wasn't spending my own money on this thing, I might have chickened out by now and just stayed home. The fact that I'm making the trip by myself, in spite of my extreme shyness, is quite clearly a sign that I've completely lost my mind. :P

I also got a new job recently. Sadly, it's still just a part-time job but hopefully I'll be able to work a full 6 hours everyday instead of the 3 to 5 hours I've been getting from my old job lately. Our company recently got a job from a government contractor to convert a whole bunch of printed manuscripts into an online format so they can be put into a searchable database. If we do a good job with the first batch that they send us, then we'll probably be getting more of the same, and some of it might even be the classified stuff with required background checks and everything. This is potentially a very big break for our company and could mean more jobs in the future, maybe even full-time ones, because obviously all this sensitive Government material can't be outsourced overseas. So that's what I'll be doing from home and I've been in training for it for the past week. It's been pretty interesting so far, although the article I was practicing on today was very annoying because it had 130+ references that I had to spell check and code. Talk about tedious. Ugh.

Hunh...

Well, I guess I sort of dropped off the face of the planet there for a little while. And I've been.... well, I haven't been doing anything all that interesting actually. I've just been avoiding LJ lately and wallowing in anime nostalgia as I continue to try and transfer all of my tapes over to DVD. I'd talk more about what I've been watching, but I'm sure it'd bore you all to death. :)

Oh, and I'm also officially the last person in Western civilization to get a cell phone. My mom got me one for the trip to Dragon*Con, since it turns out I'll probably be going there by myself. Which is just as well, i guess since the only hotel room I could get was one with only one bed. I wish I could have gotten one in the con hotel itself, but when I tried using the codes the website gave, it kept telling me that no rooms were available for the dates i wanted, so I guess they were all booked. Oh well. A hotel a block or so away is certainly better than nothing.

And cutting for a brief fandom-related loss of temper. It's a flame, really, so skip if you want to. )

*sighs*

I am so very, very bored. All it's been doing is raining and thundering, because what's left of Tropical Storm Gaston is sitting right on top of us. I've been watching the news, and there's a whole heck of a lot of flooding going on around the area. More than I've seen in quite a while. I don't think the damage is going to be quite as bad as Hurricane Isabel was, though, so that's something at least.

I finished reading all the Vulkon reports that [livejournal.com profile] teenes has up so far. I love reading about other peoples con experiences, and she's done a great job transcribing some of the Q&A sessions. But maybe I shouldn't have read them, 'cause now I'm frustrated with James again. Dude, if he keeps this up, I am so going to fly to California and smack him over the head with the Season 7 dvds when they come out. :p Yeah, I definitely think he's letting his real life issues get in the way of interpreting Buffy's feelings for Spike.

I wish people would come up with new questions to ask him, though, because I'm tired of seeing the same old questions and same old answers pop up over and over again. At least some of them were new or things I hadn't heard before, so that was interesting. I know there are probably a lot of fans who aren't online and therefore don't know that their questions have been asked so many times before, but still.....

Ah well, it still sounds like it was a great con. I wonder if anyone has written up a report about ASH's Q&A session yet? He seems like such a fun guy and I'd love to know what he had to say.

Yeah, I'm definitely bored. Posting my opinions about a con I didn't even go to. Hoo boy.
